Image compression
“Settings → Media → Image compression”. Two methods.
| Method | What happens |
|---|---|
| Locally (the default) | the engine itself rebuilds the uploaded picture (removes the extras from the file) and, if you wish, makes a WebP copy (“Pictures in WebP too”). Nothing leaves the site |
| External service TinyPNG | after upload the picture is sent to the service, comes back lighter and replaces the original. You need a key from your TinyPNG account |
What leaves your site
With external compression, the picture itself is sent to a third-party server (api.tinify.com) and leaves your site; the service has its own storage rules and its own plan. Private files (“Private files” in “Media”) are never sent. The key is stored encrypted and is not shown after saving: an empty field on save keeps the previous key.
If the service fails
The service is a helper, not a condition of uploading. No key, no network, the service refuses, answers too slowly (the exchange timeout is 10 seconds) or the file did not get lighter — the original stays and the upload goes through as usual. A result is accepted only if it is the same picture (the same type and pixel dimensions) and came from the same service host. By default only staff pictures are sent; visitors’ pictures (avatars, comments, classifieds, forum) only with the separate checkbox “Also compress pictures of visitors”, which spends the key’s monthly quota. After a refusal by the service there are no requests for 15 minutes, and no more than 60 submissions per hour. A result with code or a script inside is not accepted. Only jpeg, png and webp files up to 5 MB are sent (the limit of the free plan); gif and everything else are not sent. The reason for a refusal is written to the log as a word (“refusal”, “timeout”, “wrong picture”), without the address or the key.
