SEO, sitemap and quality check
What to hand to search engines, how the site announces new pages and where to find problems that make it less visible.
The SEO & accessibility section has four tabs: “Issues”, “Redirects” (covered in a separate article), “Broken links” and “SEO”.
The “SEO” tab
Only SEO is changed here; other site settings are not available on it. What you can set:
- Let search engines in. Off — robots.txt asks all robots to stay away. Turn it off while the site is being built: a draft that reached the results takes long to disappear.
- Sitemap — a list of pages at /sitemap.xml. Without it a fresh entry waits weeks to be crawled. Next to it is the sitemap for people (the /sitemap page) and a link to it in the footer.
- Priorities and exclusions — lines like “mask with an asterisk, then priority and/or frequency (always, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, never) or skip”.
- Own title and description for an address — for landing pages and old addresses where the page itself gives no good title.
- Site description for search engines — the home page gives a description of the organisation and the site.
- IndexNow — about half a minute after a page is created or edited the site tells search engines itself; you can choose which one (all at once, Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver).
- Guide for neural networks — a short /llms.txt file: name, description and the list of pages from the sitemap.
- Default SEO description — used when a page has none of its own.
- Tab title — a pattern like “{page} — {site}”: the page name and the site name.
The “Issues” tab
One list of concrete problems: what hurts search results and what makes the site harder for people with disabilities. It checks the general SEO settings, published material and the latest images of the media library: for example, no description, no image for social networks, no alt text on a meaningful image. Each problem says what to do; the list can be filtered.
The “Broken links” tab
The site walks the links in its news, pages and menu and shows those that lead nowhere. It works slowly and politely: a few addresses at a time with pauses. Press the check button and the report fills in over the next minutes.
