If something breaks
The first place to look: System → Diagnostics → Error log.
On a live site the details of an error are not shown to the visitor, only a short number like [A1B2C3D4]. Find that number in the log: everything that happened is recorded there.
Common causes:
| What you see | Usually it is |
|---|---|
| A blank screen on the whole site | the active theme is broken or a PHP extension is missing |
| The site opens but the styles are not applied | mod_rewrite is not enabled |
| New features did not appear after updating the files | the “Apply” button in the “Updates” section was not clicked |
| Emails are not sent | the sending method is still set to “to a file” |
| An email did not arrive, but the panel says “sent” | System → Diagnostics → Queue → “Did not go through”: it shows the reason and a “Try again” button |
| “Page expired” when submitting a form | the session has expired; reload the page |
| The contact form seems silent | the messages are in the database anyway: Community → Messages from the site |
Do not turn on debugging on a live site. A detailed error on screen exposes the details of your server to anyone who looks.
